Tate & Lyle has won a gold award for its ‘outstanding community involvement’ from the UK-based Food and Drink Federation.
The sugar company took the award for its community programme, which seeks to raise academic standards in schools. The programme offers volunteer and financial support to groups near its east London headquarters and has assisted 6000 people in the community during the past year. Michael Grier, Tate & Lyle’s CSR manager, said the company aimed to make its programme ‘as practical as possible’. Many staff volunteer to help children to read or offer careers advice to teenagers.
Tate & Lyle also won a silver award in the workplace community category for its employee health and wellbeing scheme. This includes health awareness and fitness programmes, support for staff to quit smoking, and counselling.
On safety, the company’s units have ‘continued to outperform’ their peers in their respective sectors at a time when overall safety standards have risen, the company’s website says.
