The OK Tedi Mining company has presented sawmills together with chainsaws,
outboard motors and dinghies to the people of three villages along the
Fly River in Papua New Guinea. The company has made the gift to ensure
that when it closes its mine in 2010 locals will be able to use the
equipment to improve their living conditions.
The villagers of Mepu, Erecta and Ulawas will cut timber with the equipment for the construction of permanent houses.
Ian Mopafi, the company’s regional development implementation manager, urged the village chairmen at a handover ceremony to oversee the proper use of the equipment.
