A healthy communities programme is to be piloted by the International
Business Leaders’ Forum and the International Life Sciences
Institute Focal Point in China as the country prepares for the 2008
Beijing Olympics.
International food and beverage companies will promote good nutrition and physical fitness to combat the growing problem of obesity and chronic disease in urban areas.
The programme, co-ordinated by the IBLF’s Healthy Eating Active Living global partnership, will target community health centres, schools and clubs and will involve parents and grandparents who look after children.
The organizers hope to tackle problems such as hypertension and diabetes. The incidence of these two conditions has doubled in 20 years, and only eight per cent of China’s urban population aged between 14 and 18 take regular exercise.
