Staff at the Asian Development Bank have been urged to economize on paper, water and electricity and to reduce the solid waste they produce at the headquarters in Manila.
The call was made by vice-president Khempheng Pholsena at the opening of a resource conservation exhibition in the Philippines capital as part of World Environment Month activities in June. One of the bank’s conservation efforts was a campaign encouraging staff to switch off lights and computers during lunch breaks.
In November 2003, ADB became the first, and to date the only, multilateral development bank to receive international certification for its environmental, occupational health and safety management policies. In the first year after certification the bank cut paper consumption by half.
