Vietnam has become the first country to sign a commitment to explore and encourage sustainable fishing practices. A three-year programme of workshops and stakeholder consultations will be conducted by Vietnam’s fisheries ministry and the Marine Stewardship Council, the world’s only internationally recognized fishery certification agency.
The council, which awards a seafood eco-label, regards the agreement as a milestone in its efforts to reverse the global trend of over-fishing and marine degradation. ‘Vietnam is setting an example that we hope others will follow,’ said Rupert Howes, the council’s chief executive.
