Microsoft, the huge software group, has put $90,000 (£51,000) into an information technology training programme in Bangladesh. The initiative is part of Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential programme to bring technical skills to young people and adults throughout the world.

The project is being run in partnership with the Learn Foundation, which raises funds for IT training from expatriate Bangladeshis and has trained about 3000 rural students in recent years.

The Microsoft programme covers a range of skills from basic computer literacy to advanced business applications. Saw Ken Wye, south-east Asia president of Microsoft Asia Pacific, said: ‘Our whole aim in life is really to get more people to appreciate technology and its applications and we would also love to support local software development.’
