The Indian Tobacco Company has won the Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2004 from The Energy and Resources Institute for its e-Choupal initiative.

The project gained the award, which is given to encourage social responsibility in corporates, for its support of small and poor farmers, to whom it delivers technical information online to improve their decision-making, making it easier for them to match output to demand, improve quality and productivity, and access pricing information. The e-Choupal project already involves more than 3.1 million farmers. During the next decade the company hopes the network will cover more than 100,000 villages, representing a sixth of rural India and creating more than ten million 'e-farmers'.
