Chemicals company Henkel has come top of a new ranking of German corporate sustainability reporters.

Henkel scored 494 points out of a possible 700 in an analysis of reporting carried out by the Berlin-based Institute for Ecological Economy Research.

The institute based its assessment on 13 main social, environmental and economic criteria and 48 subcriteria. Henkel was 'exceptional' at reporting employee practices and product safety, and at directing readers to detailed data online, according to the study, which covered the 100 largest industrial and service companies and the 50 largest retailers, banks and insurers.

Of the total, 53 produced standalone sustainability reports, but only four of the 17 biggest insurers did so. Two of the four were subsidiaries of overseas companies. On the plus side, adidas-Salomon, BMW, Deutsche Telekom and Volkswagen were marked out for praise and the automotive sector was the best overall performer, scoring 359 points on average compared with 325 for all sectors.
