Eight more companies have joined the Johannesburg Stock Exchange's SRI index as a result of its first annual review of constituents.

The eight - Brait (banking), Discovery Holdings (life assurance), Ellerine Holdings (furniture), Imperial Holdings (transport), Oceana (fishing), Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon (construction), Liberty Group and Sanlam (both financial services) - bring the number of companies in the index to 49.

Companies have to volunteer themselves for assessment against criteria set by the compilers of the index, which was launched in May 2004. Only the 160 companies listed in the all share index are eligible for inclusion. The number of companies choosing to enter the index fell this year, but more companies met the criteria, which were tighter than last year.

For the first time, the JSE has decided to name the companies which had the best environmental performance. BHP Billiton (mining), Sasol (chemicals), Woolworths (retail), Telkom SA (telecoms), and Nedcor (banking) were among the 11 picked out for special mention.

Shell Canada has been added to the Jantzi Social Index 'in recognition of its historically strong performance in the areas of reporting and employee relations, as well as its improving community relations and environmental performance'.

The index, run by the social and environmental research company Michael Jantzi Research Associates, contains 60 Canadian companies that pass a set of 'broadly-based' social and environmental screens devised by its researchers.
