Commitments have been made by 26 companies operating in China to tackle HIV/Aids in their workplaces and their communities. Their decision follows an appeal by Wu Yi, China's vice-premier, to Chinese and international companies to play a part in limiting the epidemic.
The 26 companies have introduced or intend to implement non-discrimination policies on HIV/Aids for their China-based employees. Trevor Neilson, executive director of the Global Business Coalition on HIV and Aids, said people should not be denied employment because they are HIV-positive.
As part of the initiative, MSD China, one of the 26 companies, has signed an agreement with the health ministry to create a $30million (£16.5m) management programme in Sichuan province, to include Aids education, prevention, treatment and support. The programme will start in the autumn.
In July the National Basketball Association is bringing the Chinese superstar Yao Ming to Beijing to head an awareness campaign among young people.
