A new study by the International Labour Organization shows that 9.5 million of the 12.3 million people in forced labour worldwide are in the Asia Pacific region. The region’s main culprits, says the report, are India, Nepal and Pakistan.
The report says nearly ten million people are exploited by private agents. The rest are forced into labour by state or rebel military groups, as in Burma.
Forced labour is said in the study to be one of the world’s most lucrative businesses, generating $31.6billion (£17bn).
