A CSR research centre has been set up by Bath University in the UK. The Centre for Business, Organizations and Society aims to study ‘the relationship between corporations and the societies within which they operate’, and will carry out research ‘that informs decision-makers in government, companies and finance houses’.
The seven academic members of the centre, to be headed by director Andrew Millington, have been drawn from various disciplines, including sociology, organizational behaviour, international business, marketing and economics. Millington claimed the team ‘represents the strongest group of researchers within the field in Europe’.
Bath University has long been involved in the teaching of programmes on business in society, and introduced its Master of Science qualification in Responsibility in Business Practice nine years ago.
Several CSR research centres have been established in recent years, notably at the universities of Nottingham and Middlesex in the UK and Nijmegen University in the Netherlands.
In France IBM, Ikea and Danone recently became the first companies to sign up as partners of a new Centre for Global Responsibility at the Audencia Nantes School of Management. The centre, which will also be supported by the social rating agency Vigeo, will research socially responsible business and foster joint projects that involve companies. As part of its link with the centre, Ikea has agreed to allow masters degree students to try out CSR projects at its Nantes store.
