The UK’s public relations industry is to formulate CSR standards in the coming year.

A CSR network set up by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations two years ago is now ready to set formal standards and offer training.

Solitaire Townsend, managing director of the Futerra consultancy and the network’s chairwoman-in-waiting, said: ‘We’ve done an awful lot of talking and learning so far, and now there’s a need to focus on professional training and raising the quality of CSR [among those working in public relations].’

Townsend said the network may become more closely integrated with the institute’s general activities and could also have a secretariat, allowing corporate responsibility to be built into the institute’s training programmes.

Since the network was formed in 2003 it has held lunchtime talks and an industry event to discuss social responsibility and public relations. It intends to stage another event this year.

The CSR network has about 300 members and is to hold a membership drive later in the year.
