A network of companies and non-governmental organizations from across Asia and the Pacific has been formed to promote sustainable development, combat poverty and improve the quality of life.

The network, known as NGO and Private Sector Co-operation for Sustainable Development, provides an internet-based medium for corporates and NGOs to share experiences and case studies, find partners and work on multi-stakeholder initiatives with social and environmental benefits. Contact will be by email, virtual meetings and web conferencing.

The network is the result of a three-day workshop in Pattaya, Thailand, in March last year, organized by the Asian Development Bank and GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals. The meeting was hosted by the non-profit Population and Community Development Association, which promotes social programmes, including Aids prevention initiatives. The network’s advisory committee consists of business and NGO leaders from India, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and China, including Hong Kong.

The bank and GlaxoSmithKline will continue their support by providing ad hoc members of the advisory committee. GlaxoSmithKline has funded the secretariat, which will be based at the Kenan Institute Asia in Bangkok. One of the initiatives will be workshops on co-operation between the two sectors throughout the region.

Businesses say they can implement their CSR programmes more effectively through links with charities and other NGOs. For their part, NGOs believe partnerships with companies will improve their programmes, give them better management and provide regular funding.
