Toshiba has drawn up a procurement policy for its 400 companies establishing CSR standards it requires from suppliers.
The Japanese corporation, whose products include telephone systems, office machines and medical equipment, asks suppliers to give full consideration to human rights and labour standards, ruling out child labour, forced labour and discrimination. It insists on honest and reliable trading practices and safe, clean working environments.
Toshiba has applied the policy first to Japan and the US and will extend it next to Europe and the rest of Asia.
The corporation formed a CSR division in July 2003, reporting directly to the president, and in January 2004 it signed up to the United Nations Global Compact Initiative and its ten principles on human rights, employment and the environment.
