A group has been set up to promote corporate social responsibility on the Indian subcontinent. The initiative originated with discussions between Confederation of Indian Industry and the Delhi-based non-governmental organization Partners in Change four years ago. Various business bodies and NGOs have now formed the South Asian Alliance for Responsible Business.

The objectives include encouraging partnerships between sectors and across national boundaries, sharing knowledge and experience, bringing together CSR practitioners, starting a website and developing a regional code of conduct.

Alliance members intend to talk to governments, compile a list of organizations involved in CSR, run training courses and encourage CSR teaching in business schools.

The countries involved are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives, and members include national chambers of commerce and ActionAid groups throughout the region. The secretariat is in Kathmandu, Nepal.
