Independent auditors have certified Chiquita’s banana farms in Guatemala and Honduras to the Social Accountability 8000 labour and human rights standard. This means all Chiquita’s Latin American banana farms are now certified to the standard, which is run by Social Accountability International. The farms in Guatemala and Honduras cover 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) and employ about 14,000 people. The company adopted SA8000 as the labour standard for its code of conduct in 2000, and promised to have all its farms in Latin America compliant and certified by a third party by the end of this year.
