One of Japan’s largest paper and pulp businesses has produced an ‘action charter’ as the foundation for a CSR programme.
The seven-point charter commits Nippon Unipac Holding to pursue sustainable growth, comply with ‘the highest ethical standards and social codes of conduct’, do business ‘in a fair, transparent and liberal manner’, and produce ‘socially useful and safe products and services’.
The charter is supported by a code of conduct outlining group policy on issues such as human rights and product labelling. Nippon Unipac, based in Tokyo, will also set up a CSR helpline for employees to make comments and suggestions.
The group first considered a CSR programme last October, when it formed a board-level committee chaired by executive vice-president Koshiro Kitaoka and a ‘CSR office’ to service the committee. It says it has entered the field partly because of growing Japanese public interest. The turnover of the group, which has more than 170 subsidiaries, in 2003 was 1.2 trillion yen ($10.4bn, £5.8bn).
