Carillion has won the Impact on Society Award at this year’s Business in the Community’s Awards For Excellence.
Judges said the UK construction company won the award for its use of ‘first-class planning and monitoring techniques to take executive management, the workforce as a whole and supply chain partners on the journey of improvement.’
Standard Chartered Bank was presented with the International Award for its Partnership for Africa initiative, which organizes local community projects in 13 countries, mostly in the areas of youth, health and education.
The Prince of Wales’s Ambassador Award for individual leadership and personal action in corporate social responsibility was jointly given to Peter Davis, group chief executive of J Sainsbury, and Anthony Salz, senior partner at the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
Other winners in the awards, which are now in their fifth year, included:
Rural Action: Waitrose, for support to local suppliers
Diversity: BT, for establishing the business case for diversity
Innovative environmental performance: Shields Environmental for mobile phone recycling
Realizing Ability: Barclays, for a project to equip 1000 deaf people with information technology skills
National neighbourhood renewal: EDF Energy (formerly London Electricity and Seeboard), for its Helping Hands programme, in which staff take two days paid work time for volunteering
National healthy communities: National Grid Transco, for its Jobs Training for Young Offenders programme.
