ExxonMobil and Occidental Petroleum have joined other companies in an effort to reduce conflicts arising from the use of security forces at sites in developing countries.

The US-based oil companies have signed up to the UK/US Voluntary principles on security and human rights formulated by the US and UK governments.

They will work with groups such as Amnesty International on how best to protect sites from attack while ensuring respect for human rights.

Other affiliates include BP, ChevronTexaco and Conoco.
