McDonald’s is to develop ‘social compliance plans’ with its suppliers to help them meet the terms of its code of conduct.

The fast food chain is currently carrying out ‘compliance assessments’ to help suppliers identify areas that ‘may require extra attention’ before they can satisfy the code.

The work, revealed in the company’s first global CSR report published last month, was begun in 1998 in China, and is now being extended to other parts of the world where ‘human rights concerns might justify closer scrutiny of our suppliers’.

The company, which spends nearly $11bn (£7.6bn) a year with its suppliers, is also considering a supplier ombudsman programme to collect ‘more candid and open worker feedback’.

The report contains very few figures, but states the company will produce more in future.
