Video Interview: Jonathan Wolfson, CEO, Solazyme

By Nick Aster

TriplePundit attended the Sustainable Brands 2013 conference earlier this month. Follow along on this page for ongoing video interviews with sustainability thought leaders, corporate change agents and entrepreneurs who are leading the way to a more sustainable future.

According to Wikipedia, an oil is "any neutral, nonpolar chemical substance, that is a viscous liquid at ambient temperatures."  That covers everything from olive oil you might eat and cook with, to the petroleum we use to power the majority of our transportation needs and many, many things in between. Solazyme is a well known Bay Area company that is using algae to produce (in theory) almost any kind of oil.

The implication for sustainability are clearly enormous - from  cleaner burning bio-fuels that don't involve drilling, drastically healthier cooking oil, to better soaps.  From a business perspective it's a wonderful win as well given that all of these oils can be produced from a single facility and switched out depending on needs.

I got a few minutes with CEO Jonathan Wolfson to go over an introduction to what Solazyme does and the types of oils that will soon be hitting the market.
